PRESS :

"[...] It was just over a year ago that the last whispers of Vincent Andelmoth‘s iNsCissors graced our homes with Destin, a score which was composed for a film by well-known photographer John Santerineross. It hasn’t been quite so long for Aimaproject, whose own largely collaborative release, Di Aima il Segno, was explored just six short months ago. Both releases were awarded with perfect scores [...] and though the very existence of Sub Athenian Structures Alive is thus owed to the live action of Andelmoth, Aimaproject’s presence is exceptional if not demanding. We’re still welcomed by the vast cinematic, melodic approach of iNsCissors’ electronic compositions, but there is alchemy in the works here. The atmosphere that I perceive is akin to that which occurred when two behemoths in Blood Axis and Les Joyaux de la Princesse collided for the recording and release of Absinthe – La Folie Verte. In particular, “Saints Named after Slayers” seems to contain the same surreal emotional and intellectual desperation in lyricism that accompanied the Absinthe-green inferno within Michael Moynihan‘s recited chapters.

As this EP appears to have been intended as more or less a preview of things to come for iNsCissors — and as the linear notes proclaim, “to commemorate and honor the beginning of a great collaboration” — it is difficult to try and derive any deep understandings of an overall theme at work. Rather, this EP is mostly interesting in the chance being afforded to witness how the combination of two exceptionally talented artists has changed their unified approach and ability as they weave separate aural threads into gold. Both show that they are mature and seasoned musicians in that they’re individually able to soothe their own unique, eccentric styles in favor of creating something new. Somehow, Sub Athenian Structures Alive manages to come off as somewhat minimal in this regard, with the unique cinematic approach of iNsCissorS being tamed to let Aima’s voice lead the listener deep into history, lore, and hypnotic mantra. Everything from brilliantly harmonized vocal chants that would make Lisa Gerrard blush to drifting piano melodies and well-placed analog static and subtle electronics make up the greater portion of what this collaboration represents.

In the end, Sub Athenian Structures Alive is a very welcome addition to what is, for better or worse, a style of music whose best days appear to be behind it. One thing is for sure with this EP though — the more of Aimaproject’s equally angelic and devilish voice that I hear, the more that I crave it. She possesses an approach that is drenched in duality, and it is a constant and beautiful wonder to behold."
